Diggnation - Live In Brooklyn!

So yesterday, I did probably one of the nerdiest things ever in the history of my life. I drove out to NYC with Mitch to go see a podcast taped live. Now I know that sounds lame on paper, but this was just not any old podcast. This was Diggnation live! Boy was it a blast. Let me give you synopsis of the day, and follow it up with a boatload of show pics. Here we go.

So the day started at 9 AM when we embarked off towards Newark, NJ. The car ride wasn’t all that exciting. We did manage to see a ton of “oversize load” tractor trailers hauling huge and rather odd objects. The real excitement happened when we became lost at about a mile from the hotel. We were unable to keep right on the one exit and wound up in some industrial park that was decorated with flags typically found on a used car lot. After driving around the airport (and just about everywhere else), we finally made it to the hotel, and checked in. We had some overpriced bar grub and were off towards the city.

The commute towards Brooklyn was quite a lengthy one. We “just missed” almost every form of public transportation by only a few minutes. This ultimately resulted in a whole lot of waiting around. When we finally made it to the venue (after a long walk down some weird inner city industrial park) we were faced with a line of about 50 or so people. We got in line and immediately began socializing w/ many of the fellow geeks around us. It felt so good to finally be around a group of people that get Twitter, can laugh at things like Rick-Rolls in elevators (our hotel was Rick Rolled after we checked in), and freely discuss other great podcasts on the interweb.

While waiting, the geeks kept on coming. According to Jim Louderback, almost 2,000 people came to see the show. It however is unfortunate that the club only held 500 people. Speaking of the club, I would like to thank whoever came up with the pricing scheme for beer at this establishment. Who ever heard of paying 4 bucks for a PBR, or Colt 45?!?!? Regardless of price, Mitch and I still managed to have a great time. I took tons of blurry pictures, and yelled out clever remarks at opportune times. The best was when Louderback was on stage talking about the upcoming Brian Brushwood performance. I yelled out “Is he better than the juggler?” I know that probably doesn’t sound as funny, but it was more of a you had to be there moment.

From what I remember the actual Diggnation show was decent (though I dont recall a viewer pic email). Oh well. They also gave out lots of free stuff. The only thing I was able to catch was a copy of Brushwoods scamming book (I also got some random stickers and pins).

We left kind of early around 10PM, but didn’t get back to the hotel until around 2AM. We got mad lost at the airport (yet again), as just about everyone we asked for directions had simple 1 or 2 word solutions to where we should go meet the Holiday Inn bus. When we finally found P4 (unlike B4 which I originally thought we had to go to) we met up with one of the weirdest drug dealers ever. He was so crazy, talking to us about working at the airport for 27 years, and his hookups with the ladies. Every so often he would just leave us in order to go eat some fried chicken. After interacting with this character, we bid our farewells by practically running to the Holiday Inn bus. All in all, it was a wonderful trip. Now I just have to figure out what I’m going to do with the remainder of my 5 day weekend. Have a good one.
